Child's finger pushing sand into a plastic container to make a block.

If you haven't played with kinetic sand yet, you are missing out on something really fun! There are a variety of reasons why kinetic sand is great for sensory play.

First, it is moldable, so children can build, sculpt, and play with it almost any way they can think of. It also builds these skills:

  • Fine motor skills (finger strengthening, dexterity, in hand manipulation, etc.)
  • Bilateral coordination skills (using both hands together to mod and shape)
  • Visual motor skills such as eye-hand coordination

Kinetic Sand Recipe

  • 1 cup of play sand
  • 1/2 tbsp corn starch
  • 1 tsp dish soap
  • 1 cup of water (added as needed )

  • Begin by combining the play sand and corn starch in a large bin or container.
  • Mix well.
  • In a separate container, combine water and dish soap. Stir until the water is bubbly.
  • Slowly add the water-mixture to the sand/cornstarch and mix well.
