In this question-and-answer series with Maurer from October 5, 2021, learn more about her experiences becoming recognized as a high-quality child care facility:
IdahoSTARS: What are you most proud of about your facility?
Maurer: It is a small daycare out of my home, but it has a spacious area for the children to play and I have spent a lot of time investing in ways children can have quiet time, alone time, and large motor skills (time). I feel children can feel at home here while learning.
IdahoSTARS: What are your future goals for your facility?
Maurer: Hopefully in the near future, I will be moving to a new home that will provide more space that is just for daycare. I would also like to have more of a learning curriculum.
IdahoSTARS: Can you describe your journey through the Steps to Quality program?
Maurer: When I first started the program, I really did not know too much about the business. I started working with Tammy who was wonderful in teaching me and guiding me along on ways to organize the daycare and make it more enjoyable for the children as well as me. I learned about the business end of things as well. As time went on, I learned about safety, education, food, and always learning about new child development.
IdahoSTARS: What attributes does someone need to be successful in reaching the higher steps of Steps to Quality?
Maurer: I think you just have to have the want to learn and serve the children. It does take a little time and effort, but it is worth it for everyone.
IdahoSTARS: Knowing “success” is not only being measured by step advancement, in what ways other than a step rating have you measured your success in Steps to Quality?
Maurer: I am proud of my daycare and myself for what I have accomplished. I went from a “baby sitter” to a full-function daycare and state-approved care provider. I understand children and the business better. I believe the children enjoy being here and spending time with me. I feel they learn, and the parents are satisfied with the care I provide.
IdahoSTARS: What challenges did you face to reaching the higher steps of Steps to Quality? How did you overcome those challenges?
Maurer: At first, I did not want to invest the time in classes, because I have my own family, or the money to provide some of the required things. I hate paperwork and keeping records. However, once you get used to it, it is not that bad. Taking the time to learn and incorporate good practices, time management, and using grants were some to the big ways I overcame (challenges).
IdahoSTARS: What motivated you to participate in Steps to Quality? In what ways did you utilize regional office or coaching supports to help you increase quality in your facility?
Maurer: I love learning and improving myself. I also enjoy the financial motivation. I enjoy the knowledge of the people who have been able to coach me and come by for visits. I used to call often for information. I was a little nervous when I first started on how everything was supposed to work. I was always asking questions.

IdahoSTARS: ¿De qué está más orgullosa de su centro?
Maurer: Es una pequeña guardería fuera de mi casa, pero tiene un área espaciosa para que l@s niñ@s jueguen y he invertido mucho tiempo en maneras en que l@s niñ@s puedan tener tiempo de tranquilidad, tiempo a solas y habilidades motoras grandes (tiempo). Siento que l@s niñ@s pueden sentirse en casa aquí mientras aprenden.
IdahoSTARS: ¿Cuáles son sus objetivos futuros para su centro?
Maurer: Con suerte, en un futuro próximo, me mudaré a una nueva casa que dispondrá de más espacio sólo para la guardería. También me gustaría tener un mayor programa de aprendizaje.
IdahoSTARS: ¿Puede describir su jornada por el programa Steps to Quality?
Maurer: Cuando empecé el programa, realmente no sabía demasiado sobre el negocio. Empecé a trabajar con Tammy, que fue maravillosa al enseñarme y guiarme sobre la manera de organizar la guardería y hacerla más agradable tanto para l@s niñ@s como para mí. También aprendí sobre la parte del negocio. Con el paso del tiempo, aprendí sobre seguridad, educación, alimentación y siempre aprendiendo sobre el nuevo desarrollo infantil.
IdahoSTARS: ¿Qué atributos necesita alguien para tener éxito a la hora de alcanzar los pasos superiores de Steps to Quality?
Maurer: Creo que sólo hay que tener ganas de aprender y servir a l@s niñ@s. Requiere un poco de tiempo y esfuerzo, pero merece la pena para todos.
IdahoSTARS: Saber que el "éxito" no sólo se mide por el avance de los pasos, ¿de qué manera, aparte de la calificación de los pasos, ha medido su éxito en Steps to Quality?
Maurer: Estoy orgullosa de mi guardería y de mí misma por lo que he conseguido. Pasé de ser una "niñera" a una guardería con todas las funciones y un proveedor de cuidados aprobado por el Estado. Comprendo mejor a l@s niñ@s y el negocio. Creo que l@s niñ@s disfrutan estando aquí y pasando tiempo conmigo. Siento que aprenden y que los padres están satisfechos con el cuidado que les proporciono.
IdahoSTARS: ¿A qué retos se enfrentó para alcanzar los pasos superiores de Steps to Quality?
¿Cómo superó esos retos?
Maurer: Al principio, no quería invertir el tiempo en las clases, porque tengo mi propia familia, ni el dinero para proporcionar algunas de las cosas requeridas. Odio el papeleo y llevar registros. Sin embargo, una vez que se acostumbra uno a ello, no es tan malo. Tomarme el tiempo para aprender e incorporar buenas prácticas, manejar el tiempo y utilizar las subvenciones fueron algunas de las grandes maneras en que superé (los retos).
IdahoSTARS: ¿Qué le motivó a participar en Steps to Quality? ¿De qué manera utilizó los apoyos de la oficina regional o del coaching para ayudarle a aumentar la calidad en su centro?
Maurer: Me encanta aprender y mejorar. También disfruto de la motivación financiera. Disfruto de los conocimientos de las personas que han podido entrenarme y venir a visitarme. Solía llamar a menudo para pedir información. Estaba un poco nerviosa cuando empecé a saber cómo debía funcionar todo. Siempre estaba haciendo preguntas.
