In this question-and-answer series with Willis from October 19, 2021, learn more about her experiences becoming recognized as a high-quality child care facility:
IdahoSTARS: What are you most proud of about your facility?
Willis: I am most proud of the commitment our center has maintained to providing consistent quality care and education for the kids we care for. We have a core group of staff that have been at our center between 5-32 years who are dedicated to making a difference in the lives of children.
IdahoSTARS: What are your future goals for your facility?
Willis: A future goal for our center is to get back on track with the Steps to Quality (because the pandemic derailed us with our staffing) by coming up with a process for new teachers to be able to follow for trainings and classroom expectations to help them understand what is needed for best practices to keep our center on track.
IdahoSTARS: Can you describe your journey through the Steps to Quality program?
Willis: Our journey has not always been easy due to staff turnover, which is typical in the child care industry. We started participating in the Steps to Quality program because we have always known we can never stop learning new ways to improve what we do. There were times that we felt some best practices were too hard to achieve, let alone maintain. We worked with IdahoSTARS consultants to mentor us when needed. It was helpful for me as well as the teachers to have individualized assistance. Receiving high scores consistently on our ITERS and ECERS confirmed we were embedding best practices into our programing. Of course, the monetary awards were fun for the teachers to be able to spend on items to further improve quality!
IdahoSTARS: What attributes does someone need to be successful in reaching the higher steps of Steps to Quality?
Willis: The staff need to be committed to quality. Be able to break things down into smaller steps when needed. Utilize staff strengths to mentor others. Be organized, delegate and ask for help when needed.
IdahoSTARS: Knowing “success” is not only being measured by step advancement, in what ways other than a step rating have you measured your success in Steps to Quality?
Willis: Our reputation in the community, having a huge waiting list because of word of mouth, is one way we measure our success. Happy, well-adjusted children is another big indicator.
IdahoSTARS: What challenges did you face to reaching the higher steps of Steps to Quality? How did you overcome those challenges?
Willis: Staff turnover has been the biggest challenge we have faced, not only reaching the higher steps but even with reverifying at a current step. Ensuring enough staff have the required credits, as well as certain specific trainings, is difficult. Constantly having to train new teachers on the best practices for the classrooms has also been a challenge. It can be a lot to keep up on.
IdahoSTARS: What motivated you to participate in Steps to Quality? In what ways did you utilize regional office or coaching supports to help you increase quality in your facility?
Willis: As I mentioned earlier, we worked with IdahoSTARS consultants to mentor us when needed. It was helpful for me as well as the teachers to have individualized assistance. Mentors would come in and meet the teachers, observe some practices, and find out what they specifically needed guidance on. They would model and/or provide documentation to help improve our practices. The mentors would do kind of a preview and give feedback prior to an assessment, which was very valuable to us. Mentors would help me as the Director to set goals and keep me on track each step of the way.

IdahoSTARS: ¿De qué está más orgullosa de su centro?
Thorhaug: Estoy orgullosa de lo lejos que hemos llegado en tan poco tiempo, por nuestra cuenta, durante una pandemia. Poder ofrecer un cuidado de calidad en nuestra pequeña comunidad es un gran honor.
IdahoSTARS: ¿Cuáles son sus objetivos futuros para su centro?
Thorhaug: Espero seguir ofreciendo una atención de calidad y llegar más lejos en el programa Steps to Quality. Mis objetivos a largo plazo son mantener al personal y poder pagarles por el increíble trabajo que hacen.
IdahoSTARS: ¿Puede describir su jornada por el programa Steps to Quality?
Thorhaug: Al principio estaba nerviosa por el "cambio", pero a medida que íbamos avanzando fue sorprendente ver la diferencia en la respuesta del personal y de l@s niñ@s a nuestros cambios. El autoservicio a la hora de comer fue lo que más me puso nerviosa para ponerlo en práctica, y de nuevo l@s niñ@s me sorprendieron con lo bien que lo hicieron, ¡y comieron mejor!
IdahoSTARS: ¿Qué atributos necesita alguien para tener éxito a la hora de alcanzar los pasos superiores de Steps to Quality?
Thorhaug: ¡El trabajo en equipo y la consistencia! Empezamos Karissa's Klubhouse antes de RISE, y era mucho más confuso. Tener RISE y el conocimiento de ERS es realmente un salvavidas.
IdahoSTARS: Saber que el "éxito" no sólo se mide por el avance de los pasos, ¿de qué manera, aparte de la calificación de los pasos, ha medido su éxito en Steps to Quality?
Thorhaug: ¡Educar a las familias y a nuestra comunidad sobre lo que es Steps to Quality! Además, mi personal se está entusiasmando con la idea de fomentar nuestro cuidado de la calidad y trabajar en los CDA.
IdahoSTARS: ¿A qué retos se enfrentó para alcanzar los pasos superiores de Steps to Quality?
¿Cómo superó esos retos?
Thorhaug: Como directora, uno de mis retos era encontrar tiempo para realizar los entrenamientos y no retrasarme en las "fechas de entrega". Tenemos una tasa de rotación de personal bastante alta, por lo que intentar que estuvieran en la misma página y al día en sus entrenamientos era otro reto. Celebrar reuniones de personal con regularidad nos ayuda a todos a mantener la comunicación.
IdahoSTARS: ¿Qué le motivó a participar en Steps to Quality? ¿De qué manera utilizó los apoyos de la oficina regional o del coaching para ayudarle a aumentar la calidad en su centro?
Thorhaug: Cuando empezamos en STQ, teníamos diferentes consultores/as. La oficina de nuestra región pasó por muchos cambios, pero todos ellos han sido increíbles a la hora de mantenernos al día y entusiasmados por avanzar.
